Transportation and Shipping: All About Philately and Postage Stamps
Philately is the hobby of collecting and studying postage stamps. It can also be a captivating journey through history, culture and art. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or a curious beginner, stamp collecting offers a unique way to explore the world. It’s also a hobby that people of all ages can enjoy, making it a great diversion for the whole family.
Postal History
The world’s first postage stamp, the Penny Black, was introduced in the United Kingdom in May 1840. The design, based on a portrait by William Wyon, was chosen by Sir Rowland Hill and featured a profile of a youthful Queen Victoria. This design remained on British stamps for the next six decades. Hill also developed the idea of charging paid postage based on weight. After postage stamps were introduced, the number of letters being sent increased fivefold, and this number only kept growing up until the 20th century. Before long, people started noticing the designs of the stamps they used and collecting them, turning stamp collecting into a widespread phenomenon.
